With today being the first Saturday after the equinox, it was appropriate that the weather should take an autumnal turn with rain and wind being the order of the morning in this Poulton Primary League Division 1A clash at Poulton Youth's Cottam Hall ground. YMCA travelled to Poulton as league leaders, anxious to make it back to back 6 point hauls and put some space between themselves and the chasing pack.
With 4 regular 1st team players missing, manager Ron Evans was forced to make some changes in positions and personnel but this did not appear to hamper YMCA who went on the attack from the start. Harry Sagar picked the ball up from the kick off and set off on his first run of the morning into the heart of the Poulton defence. His cross was met by Ross Hart who fired his shot just wide of the upright. YM continued to take the game to the home side but came up against another outstanding goalkeeper who seemed to be equal to anything we could throw at him. So it seemed appropriate that the first goal should come with a deflected shot fired home by the left foot of James Cowburn following more good work from Harry Sagar. Sagar continued to terrorize the Poulton defence and after another mazy run was fouled just inside the box. Harry Fisher stepped up to take the penalty and dispatched the spot kick with aplomb to give YM a 2 goal lead at the break.
With the conditions worsening the players took to the pitch for the 2nd half no less determined to battle for the points with the home side emerging with renewed attacking vigour. Tom Wyatt put in a sterling performance in defence and Josh Moreau made a string of fine saves, reminiscent of Pat Jennings, with his legs. But YMCA continued to pass the ball freely and carved a number of chances of their own with Fisher hitting the post and George Wyatt and James Cowburn bringing the best out of the Poulton 'keeper. With the second half looking as if it would remain goalless it took a cross from Harry Sagar in the last minute of the game to Harry Fisher on the edge of the box who struck a perfect shot into the roof of the net to secure a 3-0 victory and 3 precious points.
