In one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season, last season's Division 1B champions YMCA travelled to Fisher's Field to take on the champions of Division 1A, Foxhall. The match began in overcast conditions on a hard pitch and it was clear from the start that the home side had the greater appetite for the game. Playing fast attacking football Foxhall took the game to YMCA and had Ben Holmes scrambling to make a diving save low by his post. It should have been the wake up call YMCA needed, but they failed to smell the coffee and the home side took the lead on 10 minutes when a wayward shot hit an attacker on the back and the ball deflected into the YM goal. Still, YMCA failed to respond and 4 minutes later the lead was doubled when the home side won a corner and the ball was headed into the back of the YM net. Foxhall could smell blood and in spite of some courageous YMCA defending Foxhall were gifted another fortuitous goal when a tame ball into the box was deflected in by a YM player to give them a 3 nil half time lead.
With some rousing words at half time, YMCA began the second half showing the type of spirit that was missing in the first half. Going all out for an early goal Harry Sagar gritted his teeth setting off on a characteristically mazy run. He played the ball to Oscar O'Neil and with plenty still to do O'Neil worked an opening onto his left foot to shoot powerfully into the Foxhall goal. At last YMCA began to dominate possession as they went all out to save the game. Playing as a one-man defensive shield, Nathan Keegan blocked everything Foxhall could throw at us on the break and Harry Sagar almost snatched a 2nd but saw his powerful shot well saved by the home keeper. As the clock ticked, YM were frustrated by the massed ranks of green and white defenders as the damage done in the first half proved enough to give YMCA their first defeat in Poulton Primary League football.
Had they started the match with the same level of spirit as they did the 2nd half maybe the scores could have been closer against a strong Foxhall side. Although YM had the edge in the 2nd half the home side, buoyed by 2 fortuitous goals in the 1st, had the luxury of a 3 goals lead at half time which gave them the cushion to defend in depth for the final 20 minutes. But take nothing away from an excellent Foxhall side who, on the day, were the hungrier team from the kick off.
