Match Report

Match 1

V

YMCA (1) 3 - Harry Fisher (20), Harry Sagar 2 (23, 34)

Last weekend YMCA were taking on Fleetwood's other side, Gym, to clinch the Poulton Primary League Division 1B title, this week it was a Coulton Cup Semi Final as the Champions of division 1B met division 1A's 3rd placed team Fleetwood Town.

The match kicked off on a grey but dry day with YMCA starting with a strong northerly breeze against their backs.  And it was YMCA who found their stride from the off as midfielders Harry Fisher and James Allum were at the centre of some wonderful passing moves.  And striker Oscar O'Neil almost found the net when his powerful dipping volley just scraped the top of the Town crossbar and rebounded to safety.  YMCA dominated 1st half possession but as the seconds ticked away to half time it seemed the score was destined to remain level.  But on the stroke of half time Oscar O'Neil unleashed a fierce shot at goal which the Fleetwood keeper could only parry and Harry Fisher was on hand to give YMCA a 1-0 on the stroke of half time.

In the 2nd half it was Fleetwood's turn to enjoy the wind behind them but it was YMCA who doubled their advantage just 3 minutes into the half when Harry Sagar, continuing his recent outstanding form, latched onto an O'Neil pass and steered the ball home from inside the box.  Fleetwood Town, feeling this tie might be edging away from them, stepped up their game and both Ryan Evans and Nathan Keegan were kept busy against Town's dangerous striker.  But Town were rewarded for their pressue on 31 minutes when, for the first time this season, YMCA's defence was out-paced at the back and a clinical finish reduced the deficit to 1.  Fleetwood Town pressed for an equaliser but Ben Holmes pulled off some amazing saves to keep YM ahead.  The boys in Orange battled on and the alert James Allum sent a quick throw-in to Harry Sagar who sneaked into the box to score his 2nd and YM's 3rd.  But Fleetwood fought back and YM failed to deal with a high ball into the box as a header looped unkindly over the head of Holmes to set up a thrilling finale.  YMCA pushed hard to restore a 2 goal advantage and both Sagar and O'Neil came close to adding to the score, but the Town keeper somehow managed to block YM's efforts and this wonderful game of football ended with YM enjoying the slimmest of advantages.
