And so to the final match of the Poulton Primary League Division 1B season. Top verses bottom, 2 points for the title, glory awaits...or does it?
Prior to the game the YM boys were reminded of Aesop's Fable, 'The Hare And The Tortoise', as it seemed only complacency could beat them today.
As the match kicked off in sunshine a cool damp mist slowly descended over Seafield Road giving a chill to a match which started in a blaze of white heat. Harry Fisher dispossessed the Gym right back on 4 and sent a high ball towards goal. The ball looped deliciously over the back-pedalling goalkeeper to give YM a 1-0 lead as it seemed the flood-gates might open allowing YM a stroll to the title. But a determined Gym side were having none of it as they re-grouped and fought tooth and nail in every tackle and for every ball. YM huffed and puffed but the cool air gave a lacklustre edge to their game and when they did threaten goal they found the Gym 'keeper in top form.
Rejuvenated at half time the YM boys started to play back at their very best with slick passing and quick movement on and off the ball. It took only 3 minutes for the energetic James Allum to put a high cross into the box for Harry Fisher to fire home on the half volley for his and YMCA's second. A third was added within 2 minutes as Tom Wyatt dispossessed a Gym attacker to thread the ball to Harry Sagar who finished in style following a characteristically mazy run. Harry Fisher secured his hat-trick on 27 tapping in from Oscar O'Neil's pass before O'Neil then set up Harry Sagar for his 2nd 2 minutes later. This was YM back at their best and another mystifying run from Harry Sagar drew gasps from the crowd as he returned the favour for Oscar O'Neil allowing the young Scot to score his 30th goal of the season on his birthday. O'Neil completed the scoring in the closing seconds running onto Ben Holmes's cross as YM captured the 3 points needed to secure the league title, much to the glee of Captain Robert Pickersgill.
