Key news and reports: WEEKEND 5/6 DECEMBER
BRILLIANT 13s CLAIM COUNTY CUP SEMI PLACE
Unusually, only two YMCA teams were in action this weekend, one on each day, as the depressing spell of wet weather continued into its fifth successive week. Not all YMCA teams were sidelined by waterlogged pitches but most were including our 15s home game against neighbours St Annes FC. It’s very rare for a game to be washed out at Seafield but when there is standing water on a pitch you just can’t play on it and 75% of local games were again washed out.
The one game at Seafield on the Sunday was a Lancs FA County Cup quarter final tie where our 13s took on East Lancs outfit Huncoat United. Despite more heavy rain early in the morning the tie survived, and although it thankfully remained mainly dry during the game there was a very cold blustery wind for the two teams to contend with. Our boys had it behind them in the 1st half and took an early advantage by scoring after just 3 minutes and as we dominated the remainder of the half two more goals were added to give us a 3-0 interval lead. Even facing the elements in the 2nd half our boys remained well in control and another goal gave us a 4-0 victory with a superb and totally committed team display by our boys leaving the Huncoat team totally outplayed from start to finish.
7-A-SIDEOn the Saturday at Seafield it was a Poulton Primary League’s Coulton Cup prelim round for our 9s against a strong Fleetwood Town side. The A game was a real cracker in which we took a 2-0 lead only for Town to fight back to level the scores. They then seemed to have won it with a last minute goal but with the referee about to blow the final whistle we scored again to grab a dramatic 3-3 draw. It was 0-0 at half time in the B game and the tie still in the balance but the visitors grabbed two 2nd half goals to emerge 5-3 aggregate winners, but this was a very good effort by our boys.
