Key news and reports: SEASON KICKS OFF WITH GOALS GALORE
NEW SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
SUNDAY 31st AUGUST GOALS GALORE ON OPENING DAY AT SEAFIELDFOUR APIECE FOR STEMP AND ATCHINSON Normally, on the opening day of a new season you can wear t-shirts and shorts but this had been the wettest August on record and the month ended in similar fashion, overcast and drizzly. Hardly encouraging for the winter ahead but, although the weather may have been dull and miserable, the action on the field at Seafield certainly wasn’t. Three of our teams were in action for their season’s openers and the three games produced no fewer than 29 goals, 27 of them by YMCA teams.
Our 11s’ new signing Aiden Atchison made a superb debut by bagging for of our goals in a 7-0 victory over neighbours St Annes FC. Jenda Stemp also claimed a 4-goal haul in our 14s’ 11-2 rout of Kirkham, Ben Proctor with Robbie Hunter weighing in with a pair apiece. Our 16s were also in rampant form as they demolished Warton Typhoons 9-0 with eight different names on the score sheet. Yanis Verenikis, on his return to the club after a 3-year stint at St Annes FC netted twice. Our 18s made an excellent start to their campaign in the Preston LEP League’s Youth Section Premier Division with a 4-2 win at Charnock Richard, Sam Turnock netting two of our goals. It wasn’t quite a clean-sweep though because our 11s were pipped 2-1 away to Kirkham. After we had fallen behind Owen Futter netted an equaliser before the break but the home side clinched victory with a in the closing minutes.
