YMCA 2 LAMMACK OLD BLACKBURNIANS 1
LSA YMCA Football Club lifted the Lancs FA's Under 18 Youth Cup with a victory over Blackburn outfit Lammack at the County FA's County Ground at Leyland. YMCA had the better of the early stages but failed to convert a number of decent chances. However, they eventually went ahead in the 20th minute following a foul just inside the area which resulted in a penalty award and Matty Roach firmly fired home. It remained 1-0 at half time but after the restart Lammack came much more into the game and levelled the scores, also from spot kick, harshly awarded against YMCA 'keeper Mark Gray after he had made a save at the feet of a Lammack forward. However, YMCA, who always looked more creative in attack responded well to this setback and regained their early fluency pinning Lammack back with a flurry of attacks. After a Max Rothwell strike from 25yds had crashed against the crossbar they regained the lead with 8 minutes remaining. Scott Harries, who was outstanding in midfield throughout, carried the ball from his own half and rounded two defenders before slipping a superb pass into the path of Sam Turnock who slotted home with a neat and composed finish. Lammack pressed for another equaliser in the closing stages and won a couple of late corners but YMCA held on for a deserved victory.Although Blackpool Mechanics won this trophy twice in the 1990s YMCA are the only youth football club in the Blackpool and Fylde area to achieve this feat and several of the squad played for team when it was first formed 9 years ago at Under 9 level, by current manager Peter Whiteside.
