MARVELLOUS TOURNAMENT IN MEMORY OF LITTLE JOSH
Shortly after the tragic death of 8 year-old YMCA goalkeeper Joshua Aldred last June our Under 9 team officials decided that they would like to organise a tournament in his memory, and this took place at Seafield on the Saturday of this weekend. It wasn’t ideal as regards the weather with a blustery wind and heavy squally showers throughout, but this had no affect at all on the day which started at 10.00am and finished at 5.00pm. Twenty teams took part and all games took place on four 7-a-side pitches which were in unbelievable condition despite considerable heavy rain on the previous 2 days. Following over 50 games played during the day top East Lancs outfit Huncoat and YMCA ‘A’ contested the final and this ended goalless at full time. The stalemate continued into extra time and a penalty shootout looked on the cards until Huncoat snatched a winner just 3 minutes from the end to beat us 1-0, and in the Plate Final YMCA ‘B’ beat Thornton 2-0. This was a hugely successful day and a very fitting tribute for Joshua.
